Carbon Rewind Contest Rules

Share practical ways to reduce waste and repurpose single-use household items for a chance at up to CAD$1000

ELIGIBILITY:

  1. This contest (“Contest”) is open to individuals born between 2004 and 2014

  2. Individuals who submit an eligible Contest Entry are called “Contestants”, and Contestants may be represented by an adult or other legal representative, in accordance with applicable law.

  3. The Contest requires that Contestants apply as individuals

  4. Contest open to residents of Canada

  5. Contestants may submit a maximum of one entry under each of the three categories available under the contest i.e. an individual who meets the eligible age requirement may only submit one entry into the contest for that individual for each of the categories “Repurpose”, “CoveriT”, and “Smarck”. Each of those entries is called a “Contest Entry”, and will be assessed independently of each other. A Contestant may only be awarded a maximum of one Prize award under this Contest. In the event that a Contestant’s Contest Entries into each of the categories become eligible for Prize Awards in those categories, the Contestant will be assigned the Prize Award in the category for their highest-ranking Contest Entry.

  6. A Contest Entry must clearly provide step-by-step audio-visual instructions at a pace and using a method, and level of lighting, proximity, and detail to afford viewers with visibility into the process, equipment, tools and other information used in the demonstration and needed to successfully replicate the project independently. A Contest Entry must fully comply and visually demonstrate compliance with every component of the challenge put forward including but not limited to safety requirements or protocols. Specifically and additionally,

    • for a Contest Entry to be valid in the “Repurpose” category, it must demonstrate how one can completely empty toothpaste or body lotion stored by its manufacturer as paste, gel, or in a form similar in consistency to paste or gel in a tube or similar device that allows for custom dispensing through a nozzle attached to the tube or device in which it is stored.

    • for a Contest Entry to be valid in the “CoverIT” category, it must demonstrate how one can completely empty toothpaste or body lotion stored by its manufacturer as paste, gel in a tube or similar device that allows for custom dispensing through a nozzle attached to the tube or device in which it is stored.

    • for a Contest Entry to be valid in the “Smarck” category, it must demonstrate how one can completely empty toothpaste or body lotion stored by its manufacturer as paste, gel, or in a form similar in consistency to paste or gel in a tube or similar device that allows for custom dispensing through a nozzle attached to the tube or device in which it is stored.

  7. A Contest Entry may be submitted in one of two media formats, as follows

    a) if submitting a video reel or a video demonstration, Contest entry must be in mp4 or MOV format

    b) if submitting a step-by-step visual tutorial or instruction guide, the Contest entry must be in pdf format (portable document format), and each step of the process and tools used must be accompanied by a supporting image and text, and all such text or images must be clear enough to allow a reader identify actions needed to be undertaken for successful completion of that step.

  8. A Contest Entry may be completed in one language, French or English, and may only feature one of such languages i.e. a Contest Entry must not feature both French and English, but rather one or the other.

  9. Criteria for reviewing a Contest Entry include the novelty of the concepts, ideas or project presented, the affordability of the concepts, ideas or project presented, the complexity of the creative process underlying the concepts, ideas or project or its reproduction, the overall impact of the concepts, project and ideas on carbon emissions, safety of undertaking the project, concepts and ideas, and the general applicability and utlity of the ideas or project presented.

  10. Contest Entries are intended to showcase and utilize items the Contestant already owns and has in their possession, which, in the case of the “Repurpose” challenge, would otherwise have been discarded following its intended initial or single use.

  11. All personal information received from Contestants will be administered in accordance with Government of Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act and with relevant legislation guiding the collection, use, disclosure, and destruction of personal information collected in relation to the Contest.

  12. By submitting an entry into the Contest, an individual agrees and consents to the sufficiency of and applicability of the legislation referenced in Paragraph 11 above in matters regarding personal information provided in connection with the Contest. Questions concerning the use of personal information may be directed to the Survey Administrator by email to surveys@sowcool.org

  13. Contestants may be required to answer questions relating to their Contest Entry to validate the details of their Contest Entry.

  14. Details of concepts shared by Contestants who are awarded any of the Grand Prize or Participation Prizes under the Contest may be featured by SOWCOOL.org in a documentary or at an exhibit to promote environmental stewardship, with appropriate credits attributed to the Contestants whose concepts are shared or featured in this manner.

  15. Data collected from the questionnaire that accompanies each Contest Entry will be anonymized and stripped of all personal information that may be used to identify the Contestant or the individual who submitted the Contest Entry will be used for research by SOWCOOL.org, the organizer, to obtain statistical information that attempt to gauge receptivity of, sensitivity to information that help support the reduction of carbon emissions and the ease of adopting and sustaining habits that may support a reduction in carbon emissions.

  16. The submission of false information by a Contestant into the entry may lead to the disqualification of that Contestant from the Contest.

  17. A Contest Entry may be updated only once by the Contestant within forty-eight (48) hours of submitting their Contest Entry provided the Contestant discloses that their entry is a resubmission on the Contest Entry form. Failure to disclose that a Contest Entry is a re-submission may result in the disqualification of the Contestant and Contest Entry from the Contest.

  18. Submissions into the Contest may be featured on the YouTube channel for SOWCOOL.org and CarbonRewind.org with the consent of the individual who submitted the Contest Entry, or the Contestant.

  19. The Contest requires the use of DropBox for file submission. More information on DropBox and its free services are available at DropBox.com

  20. The Contest requires each individual who submitted the Contest Entry or the Contestant actively subscribe to the YouTube account for the Contest organizer, SOWCOOL.org

  21. The Contest runs from 12:00 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time on May 25 2025 to 11:59 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time on September 25 2025.

  22. All eligible Contest Entries will be assessed by a diverse panel of judges who will select the Contest Entry to be awarded the Grand Prize of $1,000 Canadian dollars, which is only available in the Repurpose category. This Grand Prize may also be referred to as the “Grand Prize” or the “Grand Prize Award”.

  23. In addition to the Grand Prize Award available, there will be a total of eighteen (18) other Participation Prize Awards comprising three (3) Gold Participation Prize Awards of $500 under each of the Repurpose, CoverIT, and Smarck categories, six (6) Silver Participation Prize Awards of $250 with two of such awards available under each of the Repurpose, CoverIT, and Smarck categories, and nine (9) Bronze Participation Prize Awards of $100 with three of such awards available under each of the Repurpose, CoverIT, and Smarck categories.

  24. Contest Entries submitted for the Repurpose and CoveriT categories may also be entered as Contest Entries under the Smarck category. However, a Contest Entry may only be awarded a Prize Award in the category the provides it the greatest recognition, which is reflected by the size or the magnitude of the financial award provided.

  25. A Contest Entry must not utilize or promote unsafe or hazardous materials or methods. Individuals interested in participating in the Contest are advised to research and contact the manufacturer of products or items they hope to use in the Contest Entry for a Material Safety Data Sheet prior to using those products or items.

  26. Contest Entries promoting the use of unsafe or hazardous materials or methods may be disqualified from the Contest.

  27. Contest Entries deemed to be duplicates of other Contest Entries from the same individual or Contestant may cause the concept, idea or project to be discounted on the novelty or uniqueness assessment criteria.

  28. Contest Entries selected by the judges for the Grand Prize Award and the Participation Prize Awards will be posted at www.CarbonRewind.org at noon Pacific Daylight Time on November 30 2025.

  29. Individuals or Contestants whose Contest Entries are selected for the Grand Prize Award and the Participation Prize Awards will be contacted by email by surveys@sowcool.org. Individuals or Contestants contacted for the Grand Prize Award and the Participation Prize Awards will each have until December 31 2025 to claim their Prize Award.
